Bioavailable carbon (C) is a key determinant of free-living nitrogen (N) fixation, yet the regulatory role of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the paddy soil remains unclear. Using <sup>15</sup>N isotope tracing, metatranscriptomics, and high-resolution mass spectrometry, we showed that phenology-dependent DOM transformations sustained rhizosphere soil N<sub>2</sub> fixation throughout rice growth.
