Annotation: Fantasy and science fiction are two of the most influential and widely discussed genres in modern literature. Although both belong to speculative fiction and often contain extraordinary worlds, supernatural events, or advanced technologies, they differ greatly in their themes, narrative structures, world-building methods, philosophical foundations, and approaches to reality. Fantasy literature usually focuses on magic, mythology, ancient prophecies, supernatural creatures, and imaginary medieval-like settings, while science fiction is based on scientific possibility, technological development, futuristic societies, and rational explanations of extraordinary phenomena. This article explores the historical development of both genres, their literary characteristics, differences in setting, character construction, language, symbolism, and cultural functions.
