Archaeological Survey of Flood Damaged Roads in Homolovi Ruins State Park Navajo County, Arizona

This report presents the results of a Level III cultural resources survey of three roadways within Homolovi Ruins State Park. These dirt roads were damaged by storms and flooding of the Little Colorado River in the winter of 1993. Although the roads were previously surveyed as part of an intensive reconnaissance of the park by the Homolovi Research Program and no significant cultural resources were identified, additional survey was determined necessary to evaluate the flood damage and whether sensitive resources were exposed as a result of the flood.

Damage to these roads was evaluated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Although Arizona State Parks has chosen to abandon two of the roads and forego repairs at another, these actions are considered undertakings by FEMA and as such are subject to historic review pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Not improving the roads has been determined by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation as having potential adverse effects on any resources that might have been exposed by the flood.

Survey was conducted on September 14 and 15, 1994. Approximately 1.5 person days were expended on the field effort. Laurene Montero, Arizona State Parks Archaeologist, conducted the survey under the aegis of Arizona State Museum Permit 94-25. No archaeological sites or other significant archaeological resources were identified. Isolated artifacts and one small artifact scatter encountered during the survey are described within the report.
