Images and GIS from an Archaeological Evaluation at 40 High Street, Hadleigh, Suffolk 2023

This collection comprises images and GIS data from an archaeological evaluation by Cotswold Archaeology at 40 High Street, Hadleigh, Suffolk. The work was carried out in January 2023 in advance of a proposed residential development. The evaluation fieldwork comprised the excavation of a single 10m trench, designed to provide a representative sample of the site. Overburden was stripped from the trench by a mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless ditching bucket. All machining was conducted under archaeological supervision to the top of the natural substrate. The base of the trench and all upcast spoil was scanned for artefactual evidence and subject to a metal detector survey. The south western end of the trench was devoid of archaeological features whilst the north eastern end was dominated by part of a large pit likely to have been backfilled during the late 15th-16th century. Finds and environmental evidence from this feature are indicative of domestic refuse, as might be expected at the rear of a property fronting Hadleigh's medieval high street.
