Targeting Gasdermin D in Cardiovascular Diseases to Improve Cardiac Injury

This work has identified a novel anti-inflammatory therapy to improve the lives of patients who survive a heart attack but who would otherwise progress to heart failure. In this study, Disulfiram, an FDA-approved drug to treat alcoholism, is repurposed to lower inflammation and reduce cardiac damage and improve heart function after a heart attack. This study has also identified new molecules to further target inflammation. Overall, this comprehensive body of work has proved the notion that lowering inflammation improves cardiac injury after a heart attack and paves the way for novel treatment strategies and the repurposing of old drugs.
