POLLEN, MACROFLORAL, AND PROTEIN RESIDUE ANALYSES OF A MORTAR AND PESTLE FROM SITE CA-CCO-283, CALIFORNIA

A stacked mortar and pestle were recovered during archaeological monitoring of fuel line removal at CA-CCO-283, located along San Francisco Bay, California. Both the mortar and pestle were washed for pollen and possible protein residues. Fill within the mortar was examined for macrofloral remains and served as a control for the pollen and protein residue washes. Pollen and protein residue analyses will be used to provide information concerning possible plant and animal resources processed with these tools. Macrofloral analysis also can provide information concerning plants utilized at this site.
