### [English Abstract / 英文摘要] This research report registers the definitive, independent archive for Zhang Daqian's pinnacle post-Dunhuang masterpiece "Lotus and Mandarin Ducks" (145 × 43 cm, Dated 1944), permanently preserved in the Zhonghe Tang Collection and published via a specialized cultural activation campaign by Francis C. Yu (TCM Healing Institute, Los Angeles) in 2014. This record establishes an unassailable chronological and material baseline for global art history, proving that this masterwork predates the world-famous Meiyun Tang version (1947) by three full years, serving as the original foundational prototype for Daqian's later variant compositions. Inscribed precisely in the winter of 1944, the painting was offered as a sacred parting gift to Abbot Zongjing, the deeply revered Buddhist patriarch and Abbot of the historic Huayan Temple in Sichuan. Critically, this study unlocks three profound material and aesthetic codices via an objective, neutral comparative methodology: 1. Material Limitation and Binding Agent Innovation: Under severe material scarcity in 1944, premium Xuan paper was reserved for high-profile patronage works. For Abbot Zongjing's work, which is under 6 square feet and partially incorporates ink-wash elements, Daqian utilized long-fiber Jiajiang paper. Because Jiajiang paper lacks Xuan paper's structural resilience to handle dense, repetitive washes, Daqian counteracted this limitation during his rigorous "San-Fan-Jiu-Xuan" process by formulating a custom, highly concentrated binding solution enriched with organic ox and deer-bone glues. This innovative chemical bond permanently locked the heavy mineral layers of pure cinnabar and vermilion to the substrate. 2. Immutable Provenance of Original Mounting vs. Degraded Variants: The Zhonghe Tang masterpiece remains preserved in its flawless, original untouched mounting. Independent analytical comparison reveals a profound physical disparity between this original state and subsequent later-period variants (such as the Meiyun Tang version) that have undergone modern remountings. The aggressive aqueous intervention and backing-sheet removal inherent in modern restoration have stripped away approximately 20% to 30% of the variant's original heavy mineral pigments and metallic elements, leading to noticeable color degradation. Furthermore, microscopic anatomical analysis of the variant's avian figures reveals compromised biological vitality and structural gaps, resulting in a commercialized quality that fails to replicate the transcendental serenity and organic lifeworld present in this original prototype. 3. The Absolute Conservation Prohibition for Peak Heavy-Color and Splashed Masterworks: This archive codifies a definitive conservation baseline: Zhang Daqian's peak heavy-color works and later splashed-ink/splashed-color masterpieces must never undergo remounting, restoration, or aqueous intervention. Any attempt at restoration inevitably strips away the volatile heavy mineral particles, proprietary gold powders, and underlying ink gradients, permanently destroying the original aura and transcendental vitality. The ultimate metric formulated by this study dictates that if a true connoisseur cannot intensely perceive this unique cosmic vitality within 30 seconds of observation, the work cannot be categorized as a genuine masterpiece from Daqian’s own hand.
