This study concerns the characterization of Paenobacillus lautus - an endophytic bacteria isolated from Leucojum aestivum L. (Amaryllidaceae) in vitro plants and the assessment of its biosynthetic abilities. Amaryllidaceae plants produce important medicinal alkaloids, especially galanthamine, used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. However, there is not enough plant-derived galanthamine to meet an increasing demand. One of the latest trends in the contemporary biotechnology is the possibility to use the ability of endophytic microorganisms to produce medicinal substances, as well as their stimulating effect on the biosynthesis of specialized metabolites under in vitro conditions.
