Paratrimastix pyriformis is a member of the Preaxostyla clade of microbial eukaryotes, known for containing members completely without mitochondria (eg. Monocercomonoides exilis). P. pyriformis, on the other hand, has a reduced mitochondrion resembling a hydrogenosome. Therefore, P. pyriformis is crucial for understanding the process of reductive evolution of mitochondria.
