VPRS 16810 Nursing Staff Records, Pupils and Nurses

This series contains 2 volumes which contain information in relation to trainee nurses.Volume 1 has the title 'Pupils and Nurses' on the front cover and 'Nurse Trainees Register 1897 - 1908' on the spine. The volume actually records trainees who commenced training from 1897 to 1904. Details for these nurses continued to be added until c1909. According to the RCH Archives this volume is the earliest RCH nursing administrative record extant.Volume 2 has the title 'Nursing Staff' on the front cover, but like the first volume seems only to be a record of trainee nurses. This volume records trainees who commenced training from 1913 to 1918. Details for these nurses continued to be added until c1920.Related records for trainees in Volume 2 may also be found in VPRS 16838 Nursing Staff Training Record Books.There appears to be a gap for records of trainees who commenced between 1905 and 1912. This is subject to further research.The nurses have been added to the volume chronologically according to the date they entered service. Each nurse has a separate page of information, which provides a history of key events during their time at the hospital. Information recorded includes the name of the nurse, date of entry to the hospital, training record, sick/holiday leave taken, whether certificate was gained and final appointment or destination. Most nurses appear to have left the hospital at the end of their training period of approximately three years.The arrangement of the information in the volumes is similar to that of Unit 1 in VPRS 16809 (Register of Domestic Staff).Note that it appears to have been the practice that if a nurse had the same surname as another, then the last to be employed was given an alias by which they were to be known.Prior to transfer to Public Record Office Victoria, the records in this series were maintained as part of the RCH Archives. They were part of RCH accession number 2007/003.
