Mineral reactivity determines root effects on soil organic carbon

We constructed artificial root-soil systems to test hypotheses about controls on soil carbon formation and loss. The experiment was a fully factorial manipulation of four factors: soil mineralogy, presence of roots, chemistry of soil carbon inputs, and composition of the soil microbial community.
