The economics of the recreational for-hire fishing industry in the Northeast United States

"The for-hire recreational fishing industry along the northeastern coast of the United States (ME - NC), provides an important outdoor leisure service for many individuals and sustains economic activity in the form of sales, income, and employment throughout the region. In 2011, nearly 1.6 million passengers fished aboard for-hire boats operating in marine waters of the Northeast. While the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) regularly collects detailed catch, effort, and expenditure information from anglers fishing aboard for-hire vessels, no data are collected about the business structure and costs of the marine for-hire fishing industry operating in the Northeast.
