VUB Brussel 2026 - European Hornet Dataset

VUB Brussels 2026's iGEM project investigates whether synthetic biology, AI and hardware can create a solution for the invasive Asian Hornet. Selectivity towards Asian Hornets was conveyed through an AI system. To train this system, we merged various existing datasets (details available on the wiki: https://2026.igem.wiki/vub-brussels/index.html) and created one dataset ourselves.This dataset comprises 6097 hand-annotated polygon European Hornet images that were scraped from iNaturalist and filtered by licence: CC0. Annotation was done through Roboflow (https://roboflow.com/). The saved format of the dataset is YOLOv26. The dataset is already split into train/test/validate in roughly 70/15/15.We advise users of this dataset to carefully review the annotations when combining it with other insects. Be aware that only European hornets are annotated here. If one were to make a model that splits between other insects, there may be unannotated insects in those images.
