In the Etruscan Tomba degli Scudi, an important burial site located in the necropolis of Tarquinia (Viterbo, Italy), we discovered the moonmilk, a nanostructured secondary calcium carbonate, characterized by a nano-rod shape. We analyzed the microbial community in five out of eight tombs to identify a common bacterial core of these hypogeal environments.
