Formation of Two-Dimensional Supramolecular Water Layer Containing (H₂O)₁₈ Morphology via Dianion Templating

Fumaric sodium (Na2fum) reacts with CoCl2·6H2O to form a one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymeric structure {[Co(bpp)2(H2O)2]·fum·8H2O}n (1) in the presence of 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane (bpp) from water at room temperature. An unprecedented two-dimensional (6,3) net topology of hydrogen-bonded water layers results from free water molecules through templating with fum. The 1D polymeric chains behave as pillars to join these water sheets to make an overall three-dimensional supramolecular architecture by hydrogen-bonding interactions.
