Earth-wall house construction in the Banda area, Ghana (coursed earth atakpame and wattle-and-daub)

This document describes the process of making two traditional earth-wall houses by local Nafana builders from several communities in the Banda District, Ghana. Drawing on interviews and making sessions conducted in November 2022 and January-April 2023, it describes how the local builders use their skills, knowledge and locally available materials to transform perceptions about and preserve old building practices. It provides a step-by-step description of material acquisition and processing, raising walls, roofing, plastering and flooring of a coursed earth atakpame and a wattle-and-daub structure built on the grounds of the Banda Cultural Centre.
