The data placed in figure_1.mat contains the set of three 2-dimensional fields corresponding to the following: (a) the GFED total carbon emissions (g/m2) from 2000 to 2018 over the high fire regions (cutoff is based on a 3-year running local sum of 30g/m2); (b) the spatial distribution of the normalized standard deviation of the MOPITT Co surface level concentration when DFS>1.5; and (c) the biomass burning regions constrained where the normalized standard deviation of the MOPITT CO surface concentration is larger than 0.30, over land, and located between 60oS and 60oN. The latitude and Longitude are also given lat and lon. The data placed in figure_2.mat contains the biomass burning emission regions constrained by the normalized standard deviation greater than 0.30 on each pressure level respectively from 900mb to 300mb. The variable name is re_# where 9 to 3 respectively correspond to 900mb to 300mb. The data placed in figure_3_s3.mat contains the time series of average CO concentrations at the surface and every vertical level to which the respective biomass burning CO has been lofted from the surface to 300mb. This is a function of the respective regions, based on the results in Table 1 of the referenced paper. shortname_#_ts where “shortname” can be: mex (Mexico), sam (South America), caf (Central Africa), saf (Southern Africa), csea (Continential Southeast Asia), mc (Maritime Continent), and aus (Australia), and the # means the same as above. The data placed in figure_s1.mat contains the weekly time series of the row sums of the vertical sensitivity retrieval matrix averaged over the spatial regions given in Fig 1c from 1000mb to 100mb in each file k_shortname, where shortname is the same as in figure_3_s3.mat. The time series of the weekly averaged retrieved CO concentration at 700mb over each region is also given as MRP700_shortname.
