Emotions and their manifestations in the Annales by Jan Długosz

This dataset contains excerpts about emotions and their manifestations from the “Annales seu Cronicae incliti Regni Poloniae” by Jan Długosz (Ioannes Dlugossius, Dlugosch), written in Latin between 1455 and 1480. They were collected based on emotion words (as proposed by Barbara Rosenwein), that is, various parts of speech (verbs, nouns, participles, adjectives, adverbs) that indicate emotion or emotional response, e.g. ira (anger), lacrimare (to cry). They are not lemmatized and therefore Latin conjugation and declination as well as variations in spelling has to be taken into consideration in searching.There are two columns in the file:A = bibliographical referenceB = quotation in Latin Information about column A:12 books of the “Annales” were printed in the modern edition in 11 volumes (see below)Roman numeral = book numberLD = Litterae dedicatoriae (dedicatory letter)yearp. xxx = page numberInformation about column B:Quotations are provided in the identical form to the edition. He was the most prominent Polish historian of the Middle Ages and he left a considerable amount of writings, most importantly the best known and enormous chronicle „Annales seu Cronicae incliti Regni Poloniae”. In this extraordinary work he presented Polish history from the legendary ancient beginnings until events contemporary to his life. Writing the „Annales” took him 25 years. Examination of emotions as a vital part of a worldview gives deeper insight into mentality, political culture, religiosity, as well as literary skills of Jan Długosz himself.
