Our findings reveal important insights into the prevalence of STEC in meat products at the retail level in Brazil. Notably, we found that one sample of ground beef (0.4%) tested positive for STEC, carrying all the studied virulence factors and showing positive expression of stx genes in Vero cells. This finding represents the first reported case of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 ST11 isolated from ground beef in Brazil.
