The potential of a bacterial strain to biosynthesize secondary metabolites with possible antibiotic properties can be estimated by close examination of the types of biosynthetic gene clusters present within its genome. This information, coupled with robust molecular biology and analytical chemistry initiatives, can facilitate and expedite rational antibiotic discovery programmes that can serve to address the global AMR problem.
