The study “Attitudes Toward Artificial Intelligence” was conducted by Verian (formerly Kantar Public) on behalf of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. During the survey period from January 9, 2024, to January 23, 2024, the German-speaking voting-age population aged 18 and older was surveyed via telephone interviews (CATI) about their attitudes toward innovation, digitalization, and artificial intelligence. Respondents were selected using a disproportionately stratified random sample as part of a multi-topic survey (“BUS survey”) that included both landline and mobile phone numbers (dual-frame sample). To ensure a sufficient number of cases in eastern Germany for in-depth analyses, a disproportionately large number of eastern Germans were included in the sample. For the analysis, the sample was weighted to compensate for the overrepresentation of eastern Germany. Attitudes toward digitalization and artificial intelligence (Digitalization makes our work easier; technology has become so complicated that I often don’t know how to use it; technology will help me continue to live independently even in old age; I’d like more help with everyday tasks through technological innovations; I feel anxious when I think about developments in artificial intelligence; I feel anxious when I think about developments in digitalization; using artificial intelligence makes me anxious; artificial intelligence will make many things better; I find it exciting to explore artificial intelligence; I actually know nothing about artificial intelligence; artificial intelligence creates more problems than it solves); attitudes toward artificial intelligence in various areas: whether artificial intelligence brings more advantages or more disadvantages for the German economy, for education in Germany, for innovation—that is, new developments in products, processes, and services in Germany—as well as for oneself personally; personal use of artificial intelligence in everyday life (translated a foreign-language text using artificial intelligence, e.g., with DeepL or Google Translate; asked a question of an AI, e.g., ChatGPT; used an app that identifies, for example, animals, objects, texts, or plants using artificial intelligence).
