PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external component， especially an external timepiece component， that has a different appearance depending on areas of the component and is simple and economical to make. SOLUTION: A method for assembling at least a first element 2 and a second element 3 to form， once assembled， an external component for a portable device includes the steps of: making the first element 2; making the second element 3; arranging at least a first groove 6 in the first element 2 and at least a second groove 7 in the second element 3; placing and holding the first element 2 and second element 3 end-to-end with at least a third connecting element which is inserted and locked in the first groove 6 and second groove 7.
