ABSTRACT The article seeks to consider the critical position of Graciliano Ramos towards the neorealistic novels of the 1930s in Brazil, firstly by regarding the materialist and spiritualist aspects and, later, the aesthetic and political reasons that led Brazilian fiction to decay. In the second part of the study, an attempt is made to understand how the dark period (the last years of the decade) pervades the spirit of the author, whose perspective forged a new technique when writing Barren Lives.
