Appraisal of the Archeological and Paleontological Resources of the Little Bighorn Reservoir, Big Horn County, Montana

This report is a preliminary evaluation of the character and the quantity of archeological and paleontological materials which will be destroyed by the creation of the Little Bighorn Reservoir. It has been prepared for, and at the request of, the River Basin Recreation Survey, Region Two Office, National Park Service, in accordance with a Memorandum of Understanding between the Smithsonian Institution and the National Park Service, approved October 9, 1945. It is based upon an archeological reconnaissance conducted by a survey party July 9 - 11, 1951, and a Paleontological reconnaissance in July 1947.
Aboriginal sites were located by inspection of the terrain on foot. No information was secured through local inquiry. Investigation consisted of surface examination of sites, plotting their location on maps, and recording the data on standard forms as well as photographically. Heavy vegetational cover along the river bottoms and extraordinarily unpleasant weather during the period of the reconnaissance combined to make the work so difficult that we feel the survey was only partially successful and that additional sites will be found on further reconnaissance.
