Australian National Insect Collection Images - 72203

This collection is a set of images of specimens held at the Australian National Insect Collection (ANIC). The ANIC is a critical and authoritative resource for systematics, evolutionary biology, ecology, natural resource management, biosecurity and biogeography. It is the world's largest collection of Australian insects and other invertebrates such as mites, spiders, nematodes and centipedes, housing over 12 million specimens.The Australian National Insect Collection is used by Australian and international researchers, industry, government and university students. It grows by more than 100,000 specimens each year. Significant funding for ANIC curation and research activities has been provided by: - Australian Biological Resources Study - Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry - The Grains Research and Development Corporation.The Elwood and Hannah Zimmerman Research Fund Trust and the Schlinger Foundation have created endowments for ANIC that support research in weevils (Curculionoidea) and flies (Diptera) respectively. The Australian Lepidoptera Research Endowment also supports the ANIC by funding projects that enhance the curation of the Lepidoptera collection.Lineage: This dataset is one of a series holding images from the Australian National Insect Collection. These images were taken through ongoing imaging of the physical specimen collection, and this grouping of images is arbitrary based on the time period the images were taken or the type status of the specimens, it is not a comprehensive list of all the specimens available in a taxon.As such, this dataset may not include all images from a particular taxon and we recommend the specimen image file search which can be used to search across the image datasets to find all images from a specific taxon.
