E3SM SORRM Synthetic Floats in Southern Ocean Storms

These data belong with the manuscript "Diagnosing the influence of Southern Ocean storms on air-sea carbon dioxide flux from synthetic floats: A modeling study" by Katy M. Christensen, Nicole S. Lovenduski, Mathew Maltrud, LeAnn Conlon, and Cara Nissen (in preparation for Geophysical Research Letters). Contact for data set: katy.christensen@colorado.edu The data provided here are post-processed from the raw Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SMv2) code with Argo float simulator with a Southern Ocean Regionally Refined Mesh (SORRM). Provided are the average (stormfloatsdata_2014_2023.nc) and composite (stormfloatsdata_composite_2014_2023) storm-driven anomalies for various oceanographic and atmospheric variables in Southern Ocean storms for 2014-2023, as sampled by our synthetic float array. Additionally, we provide the same storm anomaly composite variables subsampled at various (ARGO and SOCCOM) distributions of real-world float arrays. The following variables are provided: storm number (snum), storm time (time) storm longitude (lon) storm latitude (lat) Carbon flux anomaly (Cflux) dissolved inorganic carbon anomaly (DIC) ocean surface pCO2 anomaly (pCO2) dpCO2 anomaly (dpCO2) alkalinity anomaly (ALK) mixed layer depth anomaly (MLD) temperature anomaly (T) salinity anomaly (S) zonal/meridional wind anomaly (uwind,vwind) Analysis and plotting scripts are available in the provided Jupyter Notebook (Plotting_Anomalies_Composites_2026.ipynb). Storm data in the Southern Ocean, found using TempestExtreme Algorithms (Ulrich et al., 2021) on the E3SMv2 atmospheric forcing data, are also provided in the supplied txt document (SH_stormtraj_2014_2023_4080S_pdread.txt).
