Gut microbiome of protein loss enteropathy patients after Fontan procedure.

Patients with congenital heart anomaly that underwent treatment with the Fontan procedure develop protein loss enteropathy in 5-15% of cases. The latter causes a 40-50% 5 year mortality rate. To investigate the possible influence of the gut microbiome composition on the development of protein loss enteropathy, we performed 16S rRNA sequencing to determine the bacterial community stucture in Fontan patients and respective controls.
