Cauterization of the root of the left coronary artery (LCA) in the neonatal heart resulted in large reproducible lesions of the left ventricle (LV) with opposing outcomes in P1 and P3 mice. The striking difference in heart regeneration and survival in P1 MI mice was due to the RV, which displayed a unique gene expression pattern and regenerative response yielding an increase in RV mass with preserved function, whereas in P3 hearts compensatory CM hypertrophy and RV failure occurred.
