Drugs and (Dis)order Key Informant Interviews in Shan State Myanmar, 2019

Collection of 57 face-to-face semi-structured interviews with interviewees in Shan State, eastern Myanmar, carried out as part of the GCRF Drugs and (dis)order project. Interviews were carried out in the second year of the project and explore narratives around illicit drugs across and within communities in Myanmar's borderland regions, and focus on history, political economy, health and livelihoods, and ethnography with respect to local drug problems in Shan state. The interviews are framed around the research themes of (1) living with militias, drugs and systems of borderland rule; (2) young people’s lives amidst drugs and disorder; (3) changing levels of drug cultivation and opium production in Shan State; and (4) the dynamics of the drug economy in Shan State’s border towns Muse and Tachilek.
