Lab 3: Grassland and Woodlot Quadrat Dataset

Method: A one metre square quadrat was placed randomly in the grass. Each of four group members observed a quarter of the quadrat, and counted all the invertebrates found in their quarter, while the fifth group member recorded the group's findings. Each time an invertebrate was found, it's specie was recorded, and any unidentified specie was recorded as "unidentified" with a small description, so it can be identified later. After the whole quadrat was searched, the group went through their findings and counted how many different species were recorded, including the unidentified invertebrates as well. Then the quadrat was repositioned randomly within the grassland seven more times, and all the observations and recordings were repeated again. After all seven grassland quadrats were observed, the whole process was repeated seven times in the woodlot.
