The invention relates to a device for measuring a woody plant， the device comprising a first optical sensor. The invention also relates to an associated method. The object of the invention is to provide an improved method and an improved device by means of which errors in the assignment of the data can be avoided and time can be saved. This object is achieved according to the invention in that the device has a separating device on which the first optical sensor is arranged in relation to the cutting edge of the separating device in such a way that a measurement can be carried out during a cut.
