## **Abstract** \n\nThe dataset was derived by the Bioregional Assessment Programme from multiple source datasets. The source datasets are identified in the Lineage field in this metadata statement. The processes undertaken to produce this derived dataset are described in the History field in this metadata statement.\n\n\n\nThe surface water preliminary assessment extent (PAE) has been derived using maximum flood extent and stream flow data analysis for rivers in the MBC subregion.\n\n\n\nSurface water sites in MBC are ephemeral. Apart from a few wet months, flows in them are zero or close to zero. Surface water generated and used in the mining and coal seam gas developments throughout the year are much larger in comparison.\n\nThe two proposed future CSG development projects described above plan to use their wastewater within the sites, while the New Acland Expansion (Stage 3) plans to discharge treated and other water off-site as per the EPA guidelines.\n\nIf these guidelines are followed, then the PAE would be confined to the respective project site. However the surface water PAE determined here is based on accidental discharge of effluent to natural water courses due to unforeseen circumstances. \n\nIt is unclear how far the effluent water would travel in the natural water courses before being of no concern due to either dilution, evaporation, seepage or chemical transformation. There are a number of factors that determine this, including quality and quantity of spillage, existing flow in the receiving waters and prevailing weather conditions. \n\nKeeping the above in mind, a conservative approach was taken in deciding the PAE. On the other hand, it was considered that an overly large PAE increases the amount of effort required to search and list assets in the area that are affected.\n\n## **Dataset History** \n\nThe PAE boundary was originally defined in Google Earth and saved to a KML format file, which was then imported into ArcGIS as a shapefile.\n\n## **Dataset Citation** \n\nBioregional Assessment Programme (2014) Surface water preliminary assessment extent for the Maranoa-Balonne-Condamine subregion - v02.
