NRS-18593 | Register of Prefects [Newcastle Boys' High School]

The Register of Prefects was the volume in which, at the Induction of Prefects ceremony held by Newcastle Boys’ High School early in each school year, the incoming School Captain and Prefects would sign their names. This series consists now of two volumes, one of which records the Prefects for the years 1949 to 1956 (with two years omitted), the other those for the years 1958 to 1976. There may have been earlier volumes.The earlier of the two volumes now known contains a note stating that it was commenced on the fourteenth of February, 1949. This volume is a large exercise book, composed of sewn signatures between rigid card boards with a cloth spine. The later volume, although it does not commence its record until 1958, appears to have been prepared much earlier; it has a full leather binding, stamped with the school’s crest, and with recto pages headed by the numbers of successive years, in a large display hand, from 1906 until 1936. Subsequent years are pencilled in until 1958. From 1969 the printed programmes for the Induction of Prefects (which in 1975 and 1976 included the Sixth Form Awards) have been pasted or taped into the volume.
