State of the Sunda Banda Seascape Marine Protected Area Network- 2024

Indonesia’s commitments to establishing 32.5 million hectares of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) by 2030 and protecting 30% of its waters by 2045 are a testament to the country’s dedication to preserving marine biodiversity and ensuring the sustainability of marine resources. The Sunda Banda Seascape (SBS), a region of immense ecological significance, plays a pivotal role in this grand vision, contributing 42% of Indonesia’s current MPA coverage. With its rich biodiversity and vital marine habitats, the SBS is not only a global marine biodiversity hotspot but also a critical resource for the livelihoods of countless coastal communities across eight Indonesian provinces. The SBS report covers various aspects of marine conservation for the seascape, including ecological, social, management, and governance dimensions of MPAs to share with stakeholders, partners, and decision-makers.
