According to a survey on substance use in India, there were over 160 million alcohol users across India in 2017 and 2018. Out of this, 29 million people were classified as dependent users of alcohol. Overall, alcohol was found to be the most common psychoactive substance used by Indians, wherein 14.6 percent of the surveyed population were average users.
