BLACK DIASPORA IN TRANSLATION CONTEXT: DISCUSSING THE BRAZILIAN TRANSLATION OF ANGELA DAVIS' WOMEN, RACE & CLASS

ABSTRACT This article aims to address the translation of Afro-diasporic texts in Brazil, focusing on Angela Davis' Women, Race & Class (1981), translated by Heci Regina Candiani and published by Boitempo as Mulheres, raça e classe (2016). To do so, we intend to discuss: How are the paratexts (cover, back cover, preface, footnotes, among others) constituted? What were the translation strategies adopted? What is the publisher's profile? How has the critical reception of the book been in Brazil? Therefore, to understand the context of the translation of Women, Race & Class in the Brazilian cultural scene, this study is based on Descriptive Translation Studies. The works of theorists such as Lambert and Van Gorp (1985), Bassnett and Lefevere (1990), Toury (1995) and Gentzler and Tymoczko (2002), who discuss the importance of historical, social, ideological and power aspects related to translation will be considered. The contributions of Sonia E. Alvarez and Claudia de Lima Costa (2013, 2014) on policies of translation of feminist theories and practices involving Latin American women and U.S.- based Latinas will also be relevant for a reflection on gender and ethnic-racial issues in Mulheres, raça e classe.
