To improve the productivity and wood quality of poplar plantations, the effects of four planting spacings on canopy closure, biomass, and stem roundness of poplar plantations were investigated. Planting row spacing affects the canopy characteristics of plantations, which in turn influences understory vegetation and plantation productivity. Both understory vegetation biomass and the Shannon-Wiener Index were negatively correlated with Leaf Area Index (LAI), while understory vegetation diversity index and aboveground biomass were higher in stands with wider inter-row distances. Tree diameter growth increased with increasing planting spacing, and square configurations (5×5 m and 6×6 m) outperformed rectangular configurations (3×8 m and 4.5×8 m). At the age of 8 years, poplar plantations with a 5×5 m planting spacing exhibited the highest biomass. Square planting configurations yielded better stem roundness in poplars than rectangular configurations.
