Data linked to the NCN MINIATURA 6 research project and the articles published in the course of the project. The aim of the project was to prepare novel functional hybrid colorants based on natural dyes and/or colorful plant extracts and various biopolymers. For this purpose, such dyes as, for example, purpurin, carminic acid or lawsone were applied for modification of chitosan, chitin, and bamboo fibers. The project proposes the synthesis of colorful hybrids using a strategy that allows to obtain products without applying elevated temperatures as well as long-term reactions. Furthermore, appropriate selection of ingredients enabled the development of biopolymer/dye systems showing the ability to change their color under the influence of changes in the pH of the environment (pH indicators) and/or showing antibacterial properties. As part of the project, the mechanism of formation of biopolymer/dye systems was investigated, and their morphology, chemical, thermal, and light stability were determined. The implementation of the research goals resulted in the development a strategy for obtaining new coloring agents based on environmentally friendly raw materials (biopolymers and natural dyes), characterized by improved physico-chemical properties, and controlled functional properties (color changes at different pH, antibacterial properties). The obtained research results can significantly contribute to the development of the existing state-of-the-art in the fields of functional hybrid materials, modern dyes, biomaterials and smart materials.
