16s rRNA sequencing from a nitritation and denitritation system

The IFAS-SBR is a wastewater treatment system that combines a suspended biomass SBR system with the operation of attached biomass (grown on suspended plastic carriers) MBBR system (biocarriers). The objective of this reactor was to remove ammoniacal nitrogen from the strands resulting from the dewatering of the digested sludge in WWTP. For biological nitrogen removal, the nitrification/denitrification process is usually applied. However, the high concentrations of ammoniacal nitrogen and the low biodegradable organic load contain problems for applying the conventional nitrification/denitrification process. Therefore, the application of nitritation/denitritation process was chosen with the aim ammoniacal nitrogen being oxidized to nitrite (via the AOBs), NOBs being inhibited and then nitrite reduced to nitrogen gas by the heterotrophic denitrifiers.
