Supplementary Material for: Simultaneous Branch Retinal Artery and Central Retinal Vein Occlusions Following Blood Transfusion in a Young Man: A Case Report

This report describes a rare case of simultaneous branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) and central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) shortly after blood transfusion in a young man. A 20-year-old man presented with sudden loss of vision unilaterally shortly following a blood transfusion for anemia. A thorough eye checkup, fundus photography, and optical coherence tomography were conducted. The fundoscopic examination showed features suggestive of BRAO and CRVO in the right eye. Imaging revealed involvement of both vessels. Furthermore, systemic workup showed no contributory findings except for recent transfusion history. The patient was treated with ocular decompression, anticoagulation, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Despite treatment, visual recovery was incomplete. Post-transfusion concurrent BRAO and CRVO are rare, and vision-threatening events are likely linked to transient hyperviscosity or microemboli, underscoring the requirement for prompt management and larger studies to confirm this association.
