To date, the majority of tick microbiome studies have been descriptive or at a foundational level of functional analysis in limited tick species. Additionally, there is a large gap of knowledge in regards to microbiome characterization across tick species, identification of pathogen-inhibiting endosymbionts, and the ability to alter the microbiome by targeted manipulation. To address these gaps, we tested the hypothesis that the microbiome from two geographically isolated populations of D. andersoni ticks are associated with variation in pathogen acquisition.
