Here, thioacetamide (TAA) was injected intraperitoneally to establish an acute liver injury (ALI) mouse model, which induced HE. First, by performing a hierarchical clustering analysis, we categorized the TAA injected mice as cognitively compromised and cognitively normal animals to separate cognitive deficiency from hepatic injury. Next, we determined whether cognitive impairment behavior can be transmitted from ALI mice with liver function recovery by fecal microbiota transplant (FMT). Then, by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene, we determined the gut microbiota composition. Finally, we combined patch-clamp and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to detect HE progression after injecting TAA. All statistical analyses were conducted using GraphPad Prism 8.0 .
