资源简介:
This experiment examines the relationship between adult
trees and saplings – more specifically, tree diameter, distance, and canopy
coverage.
Methods:
-The experiment took place on Tuesday, September 20, 2016
from approximately 3:00-5:00 pm in warm weather conditions. 10 adult trees were randomly sampled and
measured in comparison to saplings on the York University Keele campus using
measuring tape and transect measuring tape.
-For each adult tree that was sampled, its DBH and extent
of canopy coverage were determined, followed by its distance to the closest
sapling and the sapling’s DBH. DBH was
determined by wrapping measuring tape around the tree’s trunk while the
distance between adult tree and sapling was determined using either the
measuring tape or transect measuring tape, depending on the distance.
-The data was recorded in a notebook and later copied onto an
Excel sheet. The data on Excel would
then be uploaded to Figshare.
Hypothesis:
-The length of an adult tree’s diameter will have a direct
correlation on the sapling distribution and size around it.
Prediction:
-The DBH of sapling is always less than the DBH of adult
trees around it.
-The larger the DBH of adult trees, the higher the percentage
of canopy coverage.
-The larger the DBH of the adult tree, the greater the
distance it is from its closest sapling.
-The competition and scarcity of resources make the adult trees
and saplings not be close to each other.
Meta-data:
-DBH (cm) = Diameter at Breast Height; the diameter of the
truck at chest level for the adult tree.
The data is quantitative and continuous.
-Extent of canopy coverage = An estimated percentage of
sunlight coverage by the leaves, looking straight up. The data is quantitative and continuous.
-Distance to nearest sapling (cm) = The distance between
the adult tree and the sapling, both of the same species. The data is quantitative and continuous.
-DBH of sapling (cm)
= Diameter at Breast Height; the diameter of the trunk at chest level for the
sapling. The data is quantitative and
continuous.
