Similar to the first edition, this is a comprehensive and detailed manual introducing Chinese lower tetrapod and primitive avian fossils, tailored for professional paleontologists and non-professional paleontology enthusiasts. Written in English, this volume supplements and revises new data accumulated over the 15 years (1993–2008) following the publication of the first edition, including 172 new genera and 219 new species. Most of these new taxa originate from the China-Canada Dinosaur Project in northwestern China, the Jehol Biota in northern China, the Dashankou Fauna in Gansu Province, and the Triassic marine reptile fauna of Guizhou Province. Just like its first iteration, this book retains the Linnaean classification system, while adding multiple cladograms that reflect the latest scholarly understandings of the phylogenetic relationships within and among Amphibia, Anapsida, Diapsida, Squamata, stem lepidosauromorphs, Archosauriformes, Crocodylomorpha, Pterosauria, Ornithischia, Saurischia, Aves, and Synapsida.
