Microbial diversity in different biomixtures treated with PPCPs

Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) form a group of emerging contaminants that are increasingly found in the environment. The current study investigates how the application of three PPCPs; ibuprofen, diclofenac and triclosan to different biomixtures of microcosm scale biopurification systems affect microbial communities. To achieve this goal, the biodiversity of microbial communities was studied by sequencing amplicons taxonomic marker genes from metagenomics. DNA was extracted from different biomixtures before and after treatment with these PPCPs.
