Staphylococcus epidermidis is a skin commensal and contributes to homeostasis and protection against more pathogenic bacteria. Our own previous data showed that the majority of S. epidermidis infections are caused by isolates belonging to clonal complex 2 (CC2), that includes strain ICE25. Non-CC2 strains, like 19N, are mainly represented by isolates from asymptomatic colonization.
