Letters received from successive Governors and private persons, mainly of a legal nature. Letters are extremely miscellaneous in character, covering such subjects as: jurisdiction and powers of the Judge Advocate (ie. authority to charge fees and scale of fees to be charged, issuing of writs in the Judge Advocate's own name, etc.), issuing of warrants to convene courts, petitions for release from gaol, character references for defendants in criminal causes, requests for copies of minutes of proceedings in causes, petitions respecting the conduct and mode of business of the Judge Advocate, position of the Judge Advocate as "Secretary to the Governor", etc. Copies of replies by Judge Advocate Dore (1798-1800) are sometimes included on the back of letters received.1791, 1798-1811 (5/1112). 1 box (part).Note: This description is extracted from Concise Guide to the State Archives of New South Wales, 3rd Edition 2000.
