Tobacco tax revenues in Germany 2009-2023

In 2023, around 14.7 billion euros were collected from tobacco tax. This means that tobacco tax revenue increased by 3.1 percent compared to the previous year.The tobacco tax is a federal tax which is levied as an excise duty on the sale of all types of tobacco products. Federal taxes are taxes whose entire revenue is due to the federal government. Taxes are compulsory levies that the state collects from citizens and companies. Tax revenue is the largest and most important source of income for public coffers in Germany.
