Microbial communities have central role in global environmental processes and the Earth sbiogeochemistry by cycling nutrients and fixing chemical such as carbon. Metagenomics studies havestarted to unravel the ecological interactions and metabolic networks of microbial communities onEarth. However, despite of a wide range of published metagenomics studies, the knowledge ofmicrobial ecosystems remains limited, mostly because communities are too complex and cannot besufficiently correlated to detailed environmental context. In this proposal we have samples that havebeen analyzed thoroughly with microbial diversity analysis and physiochemical conditions of thesamples are well known. The subglacial lake samples contain only five dominating bacterial taxa andare therefore well suited to unravel the ecological interactions and metabolic networks of the majorplayers of the cultured and uncultivated microbial communities in such environment.
