Qualitative Coding Table to Identify Themes and Sub-Themes during Content Analysis from: What good nurses in nursing homes look like: A qualitative study on the views of nursing home residents

Abstract Background: As China’s aging population grows, more older adults with multimorbidity are moving into nursing homes (NHs). Nurses in these settings play a central role in care quality, yet surprisingly little is known about how residents perceive nursing performance. Objectives: To explore Chinese NH residents’ views and expectations of nurses, and indicate what good nurses look like in the NH settings. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 residents from three NHs in Shanghai. Data were analyzed using content analysis. Results: Six themes emerged: Perception One: Individualized care, Perception Two: Psychological care; Perception Three: Pharmaceutical care; Perception Four: Health monitoring; Perception Five: Resident-nurse communication; and Perception Six: Increased inter-professional and resident involvement. Residents valued psychological and pharmaceutical care on the principle of resident-centered care. They also emphasized the need for clearer nurse roles in medication and basic care. Conclusion: Residents perceived that, based on the resident-centered principle, good nurses should provide a high quality of psychological and pharmaceutical care and perform effective health monitoring. Adequate communication and collaboration between nurses and key stakeholders (physicians, nursing assistants, dietitians and residents) is an important precondition for providing satisfactory care for residents. Notably, unclear role boundaries in pharmaceutical and basic care would undermine satisfaction. Health information technology might enable nurses to meet resident-perceived expectations.
